SOME OF OUR PROBLEMS NEED NO CAPITAL BUT STRONG LEADERSHIP

It no doubt that money can solve 98.99% of the problem we faced today. For instance, in order to curb load shedding, the country need 5 more power stations in order to supply enough energy and so on. However, the challenges that faced our people in our communities like teenage pregnancies, the drug use, the crime and literacy rate decline need our community leaders to seat down and take decisions that well change the way communities operate. In addition, these leader have authority to do so and all they lack is to use their absolute authority.

I grew up in rural areas in an area where kings and chiefs are still respected. They do not take advantage of the people’s respect as they act to ensure that our people are protected and in return are acting ethical in their communities. In addition to that, until I left my community, there was not even a one report of crime, rape, and violence. This is as a results of strong leadership, community values, community principles that were instilled to us as young people. I believe that we are here today because of keeping those values wherever we go with an aim of passing them to the next generation.

I believe that one of the solution to the contemporary problems facing our townships todays can only be solve if our community leaders, let alone the government can seat down and take a stance, develop community values, principles and rules that are going to be used in order to instill the way they were raised by their parents. By doing so, the kids and young growing up today will know that their future is not on drugs, their future is not on crime it is on their actions and education.

I believe Dr. Jannie Mouton, the founder of PSG Wealth was right when he said, “our problems need no capital but actions”.

SOUTH AFRICA IGNORE EARLY WARNINGS OF CORONAVIRUS. A biggest failure of intelligence in our lifetime.

Our little information about intelligence community especially foreign counter intelligence is to alert the country about any possible dangers that can harm the country at large. We always thought we are safe given the structure of National Intelligence Agency (NIA) predecessor State Security Agency (SSA) which consist of domestic and foreign unit whose main roles are to ensure that at whatever cost, the country is a safe place.

HOW RAMAPHOSA ADMINISTRATION IGNORE EARLY WARNINGS

It was late January when Chinese president Xi Jinping announce a construction of Wuhan hospital in efforts to curb a virus that was destroying people in the state of Wuhan. The Hospital took two to three weeks to be completed and is now fully functional. According to available sources, it is estimated that about 300 South Africans are staying in Wuhan alone. Two weeks after the breakout, South Africans in that country started panicking and left the country without any test of the virus. When these South Africans based in China arrived in our country, they were not subjected to testing in order to ensure that they were not affecting innocent South Africa who have no travel experience. Ramaphosa’s administration and its intelligence community failed dismally to take necessary measures to protect South African.

BREAKOUT IN SOUTH AFRICA

Obvious the first Italian based South African traveler was first detected with coronavirus in Durban in late February was not the first person.  As from mid February, people were travelling free between different countries which put them at risk of contacting this pandemic. Our government through independent media made us believe that we were still safe even though our borders were still open to internationals. They continue to blind us by telling us the person with Coronavirus were quarantined and were having no contact with the nation. It did not take ten days after that the numbers climb in a lightning speed to 13 in a space of 15 days. It was then that the government started addressing the nation about possible measures they were going to be take to prevent the pandemic.

IT WAS TOO LATE

South Africa is one of the biggest countries that trade with China, which put them at a high risk of being the first countries to contact the virus through trade. A number of South African students are studying in different parts of China. Government failed to close the border between South African and China and follow up by closing all international flights. Even though this was not going to stop the  coronavirus from spreading, but it was going to slow it by a rate of 50% than it is today. Secondly Ramaphosa administration failed to quickly stop gathering of people as well as close schools early, prohibit any firms that were operating while orders were imposed.

SOLUTION ON CURRENT STATE.

South Africa has been thrown into junk status by Moody’s which is not a problem and does not make any sense. There following are my suggested solutions that can help during this lockdown.

  • Close provincial borders – This is not a holiday, people must stay indoors and stop travelling from provinces to provinces. By travelling to other provinces, they are taking this virus to innocent people in rural areas who were not exposed to the virus.
  • Spirit manufactures must help chemicals –  South Africa is home to one of the world largest spirit manufacturers like KWV and Le Roux. It was only last week that sanitizer producers stated that they were running out ethanol and alcohol. These spirit manufacturers must join hands and help.
  • Rich must show up at poor– Twenty one days with no work no salary is like a 3 months to other South Africans. There are people whom before they eat they need to go and hustle food each and every day. Rich people must make sure that they deliver foods at depots especially in townships and rural areas in order for them to get something to eat.
  • Mass testing of South African free of charge – In order to fight this pandemic successfully, it will be wise to know the correct number of infected. In that way government will be able to isolate and cure those people separately.
  • Private hospitals must not be private this time – This is a right time that companies must work together to solve this problem. Private hospitals must open hands and join forces with DoH and assisting the hospitals in trying to accommodate the increasing number of patience.
  • Hotels must join forces and open spaces. – Tsogo Sun led by example closing 36 hotels due to lack of tourism at this time. They open these hotels to people suffering from pandemic and who are on isolation. We urge other to follow the example and assist.

Fighting this coronavirus will not only take government but every stakeholder in South Africa. By the way government is everyone who is paying tax in country. In my understand, even the unemployed are paying the tax, when they are buying food at shop. If government announce a nationwide lockdown, let us all as South African adhere to that and stay indoors in order to avoid to contact the coronavirus. It will be so sad when we fill hospitals dying from something that we were having options to prevent from spreading. Together, we can.

EASTERN CAPE MUST QUARANTINE ITS BORDERS TO AVOID EASTER WEEKEND HORROR.

Eastern Cape is one of the provinces in South Africa that has not detected any COVID 19 virus to its 6.25 million people. According to health Spokesperson in that province, this is not because EC has drastic or strict measures to fight this disease that has already took lives of more that 12 000 people across the world, but because 83.6% of the people are locals and are rarely in contact with people from other provinces. However, the lack of testing resources, and the high prices of testing this deadly disease is also a contributing factor that withold people to come forward and test for COVID 19 virus.

MEASURES TO COUNTER THE VIRUS NOT TO ENTER THE PROVINCE

Bill Gates state that COVID 19 virus will hit Africa hard, had it manage to penetrate to the poor people. This statement was supported by health MEC Dr. Zweli Mkhize on his daily update about the virus that, the state must try by all means that this virus is not coming next to the poor as it will be difficult for them to have money and medicals to survive. In EC, 71.87% people are in rural areas and have no access to good quality health system but rather depend on public hospitals whom are unable to manage the capacity of other patients suffering from other diseases.

Eastern Cape like Gauteng and Western Cape is not more industrialized like the latter, which make people leave the province to look for greener pastures in other provinces. According to the study conducted by Rhodes University in 2015, over 1 million people from Eastern Cape are working either in KwaZulu Natal and Western Cape alone. This lead to thousands of people travelling from these provinces over Easter holidays to spend time with their families. The outcry is that these people leaving in these provinces that are already affected with COVID 19 can bring the COVID 19 back into the province unintentionally.

SOLUTION

  1. QUARANTINE ALL BORDERS AND AIRPORTS DURING EASTER WEEKENDS

One of the first measured the provincial government should do is to make sure that people are quarantined before entering the province in order to avoid the spread of the virus to the beautiful province. This can be done in a form of vaccination in all  borders entering the province from Western Cape, [Graaf] Free State [Sperkspruit and Aliwal North] KwaZulu Natal [Kokstad] Gauteng [Kokstad]. This will not stop the virus to spread but it will minimise the risk by 46%. This is because there are people who might used small roads entering the province and avoid being tested and isolated. Same must applies to all our Airports from Port Elizabeth via East London to Umtata.

    2. SELF ISOLATION

Even though Easter holiday is only a weekend, it will be a good idea to make sure that those people working from other provinces are safe and are also protecting their families are not just allowed to come closer to their families instantly, rather try to avoid a direct contact. This will also help ease the spread of the virus.

   3. PROVISION OF FREE MUSKS TO EVERYONE

These musks must available from the borders of the so that people can just pass and take them home while driving. The use of these musks will help prevent those who are already affected by the virus but dont know their status not to spread the virus to family members that are living peacefully at homes.

  4. SUBSIDIZING HANDS SANITIZERS

The increase in the use of hand sinitizers as preventative measures have cause an increase in the price at all stores across the country. We urge government to intervene and provide free sanitizers to poor people in rural towns as people use stores in numbers and became vulnerable to the virus.

In summary

If we say we love our province, there is no need to keep quit and watch the deadly disease come to the poor and destroy them. This is the right time to take drastic measures and protect what is ours. Our people, our heritage and our dignity. We were not born weak. Our elders and ancestors were the founders of science and cure. The overcome the 1936 deadly locasts called inkumbi with resources and technology that were here to destroy their plantation, they overcome the 1942 drought that was called isomiso that lasted for 8 months. Today, we have all the technology and resources to overcome all the diseases that are here to destroy the human race. NO COVID 19 VIRUS SHALL PROSPER.

REFLECTING ON MY LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT FROM ONL 181. Looking back from Digital literacy to Blended learning.

There is nothing important than continuous learning even if you have a double PhD. Everything that is new from you is news and you are going to learn something that you do not know. In my last blog, I am going to reflect on my past experience, learning as well as development and future application of the course. I gain a lot of information from my colleagues from my PBL 15 as well from weekly webinars.

Starting from the importance of digital literacy which was the first topic. I have learned that the impact that technology has had on today’s schools has been quite significant. This widespread adoption of technology has completely changed how teachers teach and students learn. Teachers are learning how to teach with emerging technologies tablets, iPads, Smart phones, digital cameras, computers, while students are using advanced technology to shape how they learn. Student perceptions in the study believe that technology helps them retain information better.

Beshaw, D. (2014) stated that teachers are learning how to teach with emerging technologies tablets, iPads, Smart phones, digital cameras, computers, while students are using advanced technology to shape how they learn. The ONL has also introduced to different tools that I can use to engage my students digitally to simplify my work and to make them understand their work easier. Today’s technology enables students to learn at their own pace. For example, almost all apps allow for individualized instruction. Students can learn according to their abilities and needs.

Another electrifying topic was Open Learning and Sharing with the education sector. This is very important given that academia are moving to the digital direction. The good news for teachers and students is that a new category of resources, open educational resources has emerged over the past several years, and some universities and teachers are finding that it can offer a lot of benefits when used effectively. According to University of South Carolina (2016) Open Educational Resources are educational materials offered freely and openly for anyone to use. They are usually licensed to allow sharing, remixing, or customization. The resources can include textbooks, full courses, course materials, modules, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other resources used to support access to knowledge.

From there we move to the very interesting topic which talks about Students collaboration. Each and every PBL group member was willing to lead this topic given that it was one of the most popular on our field of expertise.  According to Nuiteq, (2017) Collaborative learning makes students with different backgrounds, race, or up bringing, to work together. They come together in a setting that maybe would not be possible if it were not for collaborative learning. In my understanding collaborative learning methodology is ideal for children that have difficulties in a social setting. I fully agree with the latter on terms that group work can be an effective method to motivate students, encourage active learning, and develop key critical-thinking, communication, and decision-making skills.

University of Birmingham (2014) also list benefits of students collaboration as building trust, learn from peers, gain confidence, as well as developing social skills. Sharing these benefits with your students in a transparent manner helps them understand how group work can improve learning and prepare them for life experiences. In my experience as a former face to face lecturer now online lecturer, bringing students students together helps solve problems as quickly as possible. One of the things I notice was that group working can make study more efficient and fun. Working with others enables you to pool your ideas and see problems from different perspectives.

Last but not least, we discussed the last topic which focus on Blended learning as well as constructive alignment. According to Morisson, (2016) online courses are nothing new, but the idea of delivering them to students who are physically present in the university is unusual. It means that all students at Imperial will have access to business education, which is something they want and gives them an enormous flexibility,” he adds. In my experience as an Online Lecturer and a student for ONL 181 I learned that blended learning is a natural development to the growing accessibility of e-Learning, online resources and the continued need for a human component in the learning experience.

SUMMARY

I am so happy to be one the students who were part of ONL 181. It was so educative and integrated. my group members were so patient with one another. I will recommend everyone who is in academia across the world to do this ONL course so as to improve his/her skills. Now I know about plenty of tools used to advise my students, namely Zoom, Flipgrid, Padlet, eBooks, mind-mapping, etc. I am looking forward to using each one of these tools wisely and so as to help my student not only pass my course but understand the content.

BLENDED LEARNING, (The future of online education in both basic and higher education institutions)

Universities have long been wrestling with the internet. On the one hand it represents a huge opportunity, in the shape of an enormous resource and new methods of delivery on the other it represents a huge threat, in the shape of an enormous resource and new methods of delivery.

Giarla (2018) state that a blended learning approach ensures that the learner is engaged and driving his or her individual learning experience. This approach also helps cater to the individual needs of the learner, most students have unique learning styles and a blended approach is more likely to cater to those needs than a traditional classroom teaching experience.

ADVANTAGES OF BLENDED LEARNING AS COMPARED TO TRADITIONAL LEARNING.

It is without doubt that our children and their generations are already and will continue to grow up in a world that’s a stark reminder of how rapidly the human civilization has changed a society and world where smartphones and tablets are widespread, affordable, and replacing most computers and laptops. When students learn through a digital and online media, in addition to traditional methods, such as face-to-face classroom instruction, they are able to learn to experience personalized learning.

Bright, (2015) states that online learning gives students another opportunity to engage with the material. To use this blended learning tactic effectively, require students to complete assignments, presentations, or tests before moving on to the remaining portion of the course. Bright, (2015) further stated that although it can be time-consuming to evaluate every student in a face-to-face classroom print the tests, grade each individually by hand, and the process goes on. Instead, create evaluations online, to make the deployment, grading and tracking process simpler. Many LMS systems, for example, will automatically grade the tests for you, based on the answers you input, and record scores in the student gradebook.

CONCLUSION

Not only will Universities save money, but they will also save time. One of the greatest benefits of online learning, especially through an LMS, is data tracking and reporting. LMSs have the ability to track each step the student takes throughout the course, including logins, time tracking and grading.

WHY COLLABORATIVE LEARNING IMPORTANT?. Lets look at its benefits

In nowadays, we observe a huge growth in classroom technology, and with it, the introduction of new learning methodologies. One example that encourages collaborative learning is padlet.

The Washington University in St Louis (2016) listed benefits in that comes when students work collaboratively, namely, building trust, learn from peers, gain confidence, as well as developing social skills. Sharing these benefits with your students in a transparent manner helps them understand how group work can improve learning and prepare them for life experiences (Taylor 2016). Students’ interactions and discussions with others allow the group to construct new knowledge, place it within a conceptual framework of existing knowledge, and then refine and assess what they know and do not know.

In my experience as a former face to face lecturer now online lecturer, bringing students students together helps solve problems as quickly as possible. One of the things I notice was that group working can make study more efficient and fun. Working with others enables you to pool your ideas and see problems from different perspectives. University of Birmingham, (2014) state that working in groups gives you an excellent opportunity to get to know one another. It can be useful for encouraging social interactions and for developing strong social/learning networks.

HOW TO ENFORCE GROUP COLLABORATION

Group work can be an effective method to motivate students, encourage active learning, and develop key critical-thinking, communication, and decision-making skills. Before being an online lecture, as a face to face lecturer some of my students did not like to work in groups. One of my strategies to get them to work in groups was to dis-arrange their sitting so that they become uncomfortable and start talking amongst each other to solve problems.

First, determine how you want to organize your groups. Do you want students to work in pairs, groups of four, or some other organization? Will your students stay in the same group for a long period of time? I find that balance is important. For example, students need to learn to work together over time. in that way you will master collaborate learning.

ARE THERE ANY PROS and CONS IN USING OER? A deep reflection on open material.

Online resources may lie more in enabling our students’ learning experience than in saving time developing resources. The good news for teachers and students is that a new category of resources, open educational resources has emerged over the past several years, and some universities and teachers are finding that it can offer a lot of benefits when used effectively.

Although it is open, we need to ask ourselves as lecturers and student. It is really open? given that there are licensing that need to be follow before we access the information. We  must remember that OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. If we start to infringe those  domains and intellectual properties and use information illegally, are we doing the right thing?

Advantages of OER

Open educational resources have helped provide developing countries like South Africa  with educational support. OER online materials and courses have served as educational resources for teachers. This content strengthens teachers knowledge and helps them impart what they have learned to the students. The rising costs of commercial textbooks have continued to outstrip inflation, adversely affecting access to higher education and student learning as students forgo buying textbooks altogether. Open textbooks can help alleviate the burden of textbook costs.

Disadvantages of OER

Again I want to mention the issue of rising prices of textbooks, as well as increase in interest rates make it difficult for students to buy them locally as well as internationally. Open Educational Resources are a hot topic in education. Students need ways to lower costs. Naturally, they look to schools to provide them with better solutions. In turn, many schools look to OER to help accomplish that goal.

Recommendations

In fact there is no course materials solutions that are perfect entirely on their own. OER can provide added benefits to a class, especially when combined with other materials to ensure a well-rounded, quality education. However, one of the biggest barriers to using OER is the lack of internet in some areas in South Africa. There solution is to call for companies that are providing broadband and fiber to work with colleges and universities to roll out internet to reach all the students.

Importance of Digital Literacy in the classroom. How important is it in nowadays?

Gone are the days when learning was solely achieved using pens, paper, books, Slate, globes and chalkboards in South Africa. In today’s world, various forms of technology are routinely found in elementary, middle and high school classrooms, including interactive whiteboards, desktop computers, laptop computers, tablets and smartphones.

 belshaw-elements1.pngSource: Adapted from Belshaw. D (2014) accessed 08 October 2018

It is without doubt that the digital world offers tremendous benefits to both lecturers as well as students. It provides platforms that allow us to connect and collaborate. It opens up opportunities to learn about new and important issues, and it empowers innovation in ways that were unimaginable in early days. Do not confuse it with computer literacy, digital literacy comes with a completely different meaning. This is a branch of study that requires a deep understanding of the communal issues emerging out of digital technologies (Edys, 2018). Digital literacy is also about creating an awareness of the standard governing online behavior.

While the use of online courses and e-books is growing in South African education, we are still behind from the developed countries, given that the speed of our fibre optica is so slow compare to the first world countries. Lectures are often delivered using traditional methods, with a great reliance on dead tree materials, and physical core textbooks continue to hold ground over digital versions.  Universities, now competing more intensely with one another for the best students and quality, are increasingly seeing their own technical preparedness as a differentiating factor, and some are offering technical enticements to prospective students free devices or free e-books. Like here in Damelin College, every student who register with us is guaranteed a free tablet, a 1 gig data every month as well as free WiFi access in all our campuses across South Africa.

Benefits of digital literacy

The impact that technology has had on today’s schools has been quite significant. Today’s technology enables students to learn at their own pace. For example, almost all apps allow for individualized instruction. Students can learn according to their abilities and needs.

Recommendations

Technology occupies an important place within student’s lives. When they are not in school, just about everything that they do is connected in someway to technology. Universities can do more to teach the basic digital literacy skills that students are seeking to prepare them for the workplace. They can recognize that digital literacy skills in their broadest definition will bring great benefits to students, to their eventual place of employment, and to their lifelong working and personal life. Students, already expert users of technology, need direction to turn their technical skills into skills for learning and employability.

IS ONLINE EDUCATION TO REPLACE TRADITIONAL LEARNING.

It is without doubt that online education is the next big thing that the world will experience. Judging by the number of free and Open online courses on the web, people are free to learn anything, anywhere across the globe. People are able to go to their nine to five work and do their assignments in between break times. In that way, education is easy and accessible to everyone.

One of the biggest advantages of online learning is that companies offering them needs less office space compared to traditional classes. There is no need for a lecture hall that need desks and tables, but rather needs only fast internet connection. As long as students and their online lecturers can connect to internet. They can submit assignment anytime and anywhere across the world. Although traditional learning still have advantage of face to face with your teachers, they are becoming more expensive in the 21st century as the rent for office space keeps increasing.

Since most companies main goal is to maximize profit whilst minimizing costs. Online education is going to be their next big investment. To make people aware of online educations,  some companies have started registering their employees to do these courses free so that they can recommend them to others.

The one major feature lacking in traditional online education was that it was not as responsive to a students’ needs as was an in-person instructor. Now, adaptive technologies may be the solution to that problem. While many of these technologies are still in the making, some software and online platforms can adapt teaching material and strategies to individual learning needs, styles, and progress.

RATHER MY SOFA THAN BAFANA’S BENCH

Let us look at the rationality of this statement not in a modest and selfish way. Yes Holland bench is better than Bafana bench. Why fly all the way to warm a bench here? Baxter and company must check first if they need an overseas player to play on the day. If not don’t bring them over. That’s why during Barker’s tenure Lucas Ruu Radebe and company were owning their position. Even your own club can ask you what’s the use of flying only to sit on the bench? Really it doesn’t make sense. Again for Baxter if you are not playing for Chiefs or SSU,forget. Serero stay there till the end of your career, there’s nothing to gain in Bafana.

Ntozakuthi let’s face facts here.Serero wants to play for his country but three times he came to SA to play for his nation but was not given a game time??? No no and no  any coach who calls a player from over sees must make sure that player plays for his nation.u Baxter ubhizi ngendlalo yena.

Recommendations

I’m a Chiefs fan I might be bias. Big up to Serero for being honest,it should be a lesson to other players n Baxter as well, all our foreign based players will do wat Serero did, Jali is benched for the reckless furman, who always made fouls in dangerous areas that cost us. Rantie has been left out for useless reason even though he was scoring almost every game since the Nigeria game, next it ll be Keegan “Die poppy sal dance” Dolly ,but my question it will be, is our PSL players better than our overseas based players?.

Can we compare our PSL standards with those overseas league?. So our overseas based players should be guaranteed starting berth in our national team instead of coming here and being benched,nw we should start playing the likes of mothiba, singh etc a lot of game time even in under 23 set up, most African team dat qualify for world cup, their squad is made up of overseas based players, look at senegal for example,95% of their squad are playing outside senegal, but here in sa we believe our lazy players who r comfortable playing at home can take bafana bafana to world cup
